About this course

Being proactive is something that private practice lawyers can struggle with, as their way of working is generally based on files landing on their desk, often at the last minute and with due dates set by clients. But as in-house lawyers we are in a unique position to leverage our engagement with the business, enabling them to get ahead of legal issues and steer the direction of the legal team’s involvement in the business in a far more intentional manner.

It means that your team has the ability and resources to actively manage workload and complexity as it fluctuates or, in some cases, as it steadily increases. While some legal work will always arrive unannounced, being proactive means we have the ability to plan for work either on a regular cycle or when predicted as part of a larger project or initiative.

The following lessons provide you with tangible things you can implement to get ahead of the game, including:

  • Empowering the business to involve legal early;
  • Pre-empting legal requirements and managing resourcing ahead of time; and
  • Continually optimizing.
